The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were central to efforts to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
